HOOKSET!!!
Wow, what a great day today. Today was the first day I ever caught at fish on a jig. A bottom jig! Note: I caught two of them too! TBH I never thought I would have caught a fish on a jig. I thought i’d have to be taught by a guide or some shit, just cause I had 0 idea what I was doing. Just goes to show what trying and persistence can achieve. I’ve been fishing a jig for quite some time now. I did in the past but it was off and on, and with no desire to really really learn it or consistency. I’ve been using the jig pretty consistently for the past while, and I’ve been dragging it along the bottom on different stuff to just get an idea what each feels like. I did it at the bluffs to feel what rocks feel like. I did it on the rocks on the backyard. I did it on the shoreline rocks at rice at paudash island. I then did it at hiawatha shoal to really know that there were rocks down there. Then I did it through weeds, through sand when I could see down into the water, etc. just to know what I was throwing it at. Today I decided to pitch it into docks and drag it along the bottom, and I got 2 fish! A smallie by the docks by the railway tracks, and a LM at the docks off of Cow Island. Water temps were around 68/69 F and it warmed up to 70F later in the afternoon. Bass did feel cold though, guess cause it was because of the water temperature. Anyways, as to what a bite feels like, really the best description is “anything different”. Get an idea of what everything else feels like, and once you know that whats on the other line isn’t everything else, STH! If in doubt STH! Also remember to tighten your drag so you get the hookset in.
First bite felt like a pencil tapping at the end of the bait, and then movement. I lifted the rod to feel if a fish was on, and I felt weight, I then STH! Second fish it was more subtle. I felt weight at the end of the line, but I didn’t feel any taps or w.e, I did feel the weight move on its own though, and that’s when i STH! I think this is my new favourite way of catching fish, over topwater even! WOOT WOOT!
Man I’m so confident now! I next want to use this technique to catch fish dragging on the bottom off of some deep shoals or some shit, like in Hiawatha! Or even the tic island channel!
Later in the day I went to Walmart with I and A, and I also chilled at kowfus and played a round of cs.
PS this day started early, woke up at like 6:45 and then went fishing till like 3. It was overcast as heck and cool, later opening up and warming up at around 3pm. TBH I think i like fishing in the morning more. Save on traffic and its really nice and quiet, and you have the rest of the day. Really nice too especially this time of year in the late, late summer / early fall when everything is cool down and daytime isn’t scorching anymore
