Prefish Planning
So we’ve been fishing 5 times already and I only caught 1 bass… for everyone though, we caught 5 bass (2 ryan, 1 me). Here’s some stuff we have to be more organized and disciplined with if we want to get better:
- Set Day Routes – Set the routes to go on Navionics so we can see what we hit
- Track Fish Catches – Track exactly where and when a fish was caught, what bait was used and how was the weather
- Track weather – Given that we go fishing like 3/4x a week, let’s track the weather to see how it affects the fishing
Here’s the stuff that we will pay attention to tomorrow:
1. Healthy Weeds – Check to see where’s healthy weeds, fish them. See if healthy weeds are in southern part of lake
I know I’ve seen super duper healthy weeds beside the marina and in the river. In the open water however – by sunken island, outside of other islands on the open water, the weeds don’t appear to be very healthy – why is that?
Is it because:
– The weed species -> the weed species that grows in open water die off in mid July / August?
– The Open Water -> The open water has something to do with killing off the weeds -> pushes the algae onto the weeds and it competes with the weeds?
– The bottom composition?!?!
Here’s how I will find out -> Look @ the shitty dying weeds in the open water, take it onboard, and find out if it also grows in the healthy bays and if it does, are they healthy in the bays?

2. Fish the Southern Part of the Lake
Fish southern part, check out weed growth

Since tomorrow is pretty warm, we’ll try offshoring early in the evening, and as it gets later we’ll move to the weed beds closer to the shore / in the river
August 5th – Postfish
So the fishing trip went okay. Here’s the lowdown:
Total Fish Caught: 1 LM Bass (Sean), 1 Bluegill + 1 Rock Bass (Kyle)
Bass was caught at 8:30 PM @ 73.9 F. Temps at beginning – 5:45 PM – were around 75 F. There was like no chop during the whole trip, chop at a minimum. We just full blasted it all over to all spots.
Spots Fished: A total of 6 spots fished

- Top Point of Black Island – Used cranks here, no luck. there were some rocks on the tip of the island so I figured there would be rocks a little bit out. Saw a ball of baitfish in the water. Were all travelling together. Where tf were they going?!?! is that a good sign? Didn’t really see much weeds around. picked some up on my lure tho. Wtf are those? eurasian millfoil? Looking at it now, it does seem more lush at the top than the bottom. these weeds apparently are lush at the top and all stock in the bottom, making something like a cave when they’re all bunched up.

2. Close Point: Fished around the point. there was good weed growth here. Not those big lush bunches by the marina, but still decent enough. Definitely different than the millfoil. Again no luck here, but all we were using were “search” baits. Now that I think about it, I think it would be a little inefficient just using “search baits” around cover like this with weeds everywhere. Should do a little flipping like that seth feider guy says. Also, weeds in 7-10 feet of water! IDK why i stick to weeds in the shallows. It would make sense that in hot days like today that fish wouldn’t only be in the cover, but also deep cover.
3. Otonabee River Fork Thing: Fished here quite a bit where Jerry saw his fish and caught his bass. Nothin’. I guess too much pressure? Definitely spent too much time here.
4. Otonabee River – Sunglasses Point!: Caught a bass here again after catching the one from Sunday – and having 3 bites there that day too. I guess this means that bass do like areas for a reason and they’re not all random. Weren’t hot on the topwater, but still bit the spinnerbait tho. Lost glasses here. I saw in the reflection that they were sitting out of my shirt and that they may have fell out. Said that I would do it after cleaning the trolling motor. Bent down and fell in the lake. I could have jumped in and saved them, they did have a fairly slow fall. But I was afraid of the water lol. Something about the glasses falling into the abyss and the weeds and the deep just got to me. fuckin’ fear. and inaction! when it fell in I was like awwe its over its gone. i reached in and didn’t get it, but didn’t bother to rush for the net or anything. loser mentality
- Fear of the deep/water/weeds/abyss
- Oh I already loss its over no point
Next time, grab the fear by the horns and dive in. You know what you gotta do! Now go and use this as a $200 lesson and eat some fruit.
Stuff to do next time:
- Flip and Pitch the Grass
- Texas rig with pegged weight – Try out different weights.
- Check out weed beds just south of Cow Island between Otonabee river. there was a giant weed flat there on the way back and there quite a few fisherman fishing there beforehand.
